SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- An American Airlines flight from Tokyo has been quarantined on the tarmac at San Jose's airport after four people on board complained of symptoms like those reported from the mysterious new illness spreading through Asia, airline and city health officials said.

11:33 PST (AP) -- Two passengers and two crew members complained of symptoms similar to those found in Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, according to city health officials.

Flight 128 from Tokyo to Mineta San Jose International Airport was stopped on the tarmac short of the gate, and ambulances lined up near the plane as the 125 passengers and 14 crew members waited on board.

American Airlines notified the airport that help was needed after "the captain was informed of a passenger needing medical assistance," said Todd Burke, a spokesman for the airline.

More than 1,600 cases of the illness have been reported so far worldwide, with at least 64 deaths. Officials say it's unclear whether exposure on a flight is sufficient to infect people.

What was that story all about last week, then, I wonder? "It's the flu, stupid?" This is a little weird.

Why are these people still able to fly without being tested before they board the plane? This is irresponsible putting the number of people on board in jeopardy.

The CDC isn't perfect, but it seems to me this is being played up way over what it's history seems to implate so far. Sixty-Four deaths worldwide, mostly in China over the last couple of months isn't exactly the stuff of horror films.

In a closed air system, it seems this would be a problem. It is strange to me that nobody had problems before getting on the plane. Or if they did, they certainly shouldn't have flown.

It's too damned late to do anything, frankly. They should have leaned on China to cooperate or be cut off. And they should have stopped all travel to Hong Kong.

If two crew members on the plane came down with it, then far more than 200 passengers have been exposed. Incubation time is up to a week, or possibly up to 10 days. So these people have been flying on several flights, or have been traveling about in America, for at least a week.
